This page serves as an overview over the possibilities to get your device connected to the internet.

eduroam WiFi

The uni’s primary wifi is called eduroam. You can find explanations on how to connect your device to it on HIZ-website (however, you have to log-in with your student-ID first and navigate to “WLAN”).

For your convenience, we have listed the main instructions on this website here. Please note that the information here might be out of date; if it does not work please consult the HIZ-website.

Windows / Android Version > 12 / Linux

Use the installer found on this website: https://www.geteduroam.app/ . Enter “Universitaet des Saarlandes”. Use the login information as indicated below.

iOS / MacOS / Android Version < 12

These systems use the older CAT eduroam tool. Use the login information as indicated below.

Login Information:

  • Username: your-student-id@uni-saarland.de
    • Not @stud.uni-saarland.de !
  • Password: Your main university password

VPN

With the university VPN, you can connect to the university network from home. This is useful for example if you want to download some books from home with the license of the library or if you want to access some internal websites that are normally not accessible from home.

You may find the connection details for the VPN on the HIZ-website.

As an alternative to the officially tool, there is also an open-source alternative called OpenConnect. Note that if you use this, you may not expect any official support from the HIZ in case of problems. Use at your own risk!

LAN / Cable-Internet

In the student workrooms at the CS buildings, you can connect your laptop to the internet via cable. This is usually much more stable compared to wifi. Note that after plugging in, you need to nevertheless activate the VPN (as described above) to get connected.
