Invitation to StEP for Winter Semester 2025/2026
Dear first semesters,
Only about two weeks left until lectures begin.
Whether you are new to university, new to this university, or new to your degree program, you are bound to have a few burning questions.
To answer these questions and welcome you to the university, we are organizing the Student Orientation Phase (StEP) for students of computer science and related subjects from Wednesday to Friday in the week before lectures begin.
The first meeting will take place on October 8, 2025, at 9:00 am in the Günter-Hotz Lecture Hall in building E2 2.
At the StEP you will learn everything you need to know about your studies, as well as your new university, its procedures and organizations, how to get around in Saarbrücken and – if you just arrived from abroad – some quick-start tips for Germany.
Among other things, we will show you how to find your thesis topic, how you can plan your schedule, how far your semester ticket is valid, and what else our campus has to offer.
We will not only prepare you for your everyday life as a student, but also show you how to navigate through the jungle of institutions and facilities on campus. Starting with examination offices, the language center, the AStA, gastronomy and also possibilities to do sports, up to institutes like the International Students Centre Saar.
We hope to answer all your questions about your studies and to help you to make the start into your studies as smooth as possible. You should plan to attend the presentations from 9 am to 4 pm.
But it’s not over after 4 pm! We have planned more events for you, such as a game night, a campus tour, a city tour and a pub crawl. This will give you the opportunity to get to know each other, your surroundings and student culture.
Room Closures And Ongoing Construction Work
The work is completed and the printer is now in 107.
Due to the Software Engineering Lab, some student workrooms will be closed until the beginning of October. Specifically, this affects:
- E1 3, 012
- E1 3, 103
- E1 3, 105
- E1 3, 106
- E2 4, 008
Furthermore, room 013 in E1 3 is no longer available as a student workroom. The student printer has therefore been temporarily moved to our student council room 109. This is because the university has modernised the technical equipment in the seminar rooms in building E1 3 during the lecture-free period. All seminar rooms have been fitted with new projectors, and room 016 is being equipped with a Teams meeting setup.
After consulting with us, it was decided that, for technical reasons, rooms 013 and 107 would swap functions as part of these works: Room 013 will become a seminar room, while room 107 will be set up as a student working room in future. This means that all seminar rooms are now located on the ground floor. As part of this renovation, our student printer will also be moved to the new workroom 107 as soon as the flooring in this room has been replaced.
Since Room 013 had to be cleared for construction work before Room 107 was completed, we have temporarily set up the printer in our student council room. For this reason, access to the printer must unfortunately be restricted until the final move to 107 (hopefully before the start of lectures):
During this time, it may only be used for thesis printing and only in the presence of a student council member. To print your thesis, you are welcome to drop by our room at any time. There is usually at least one member there in the afternoon and evening who can help you.
MATH PREP COURSE 2025
You’re starting a computer science–related degree program this coming winter semester at Saarland University (e.g., Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Data Science & AI, Business Informatics, or Computer Science for Teaching)? Then the Math Prep Course is just right for you!
From September 8 to October 2, 2025, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, we’ll prepare you on campus for the essential mathematical foundations. Topics such as formal languages, logic, proofs, sets, relations, and induction will help you get a smooth start into your studies.
The course is organized on a voluntary basis by students and welcomes over 200 participants each year. In addition to lectures, tutorials, exercise sheets with personalized feedback, and a detailed script, we offer many social events where you can get to know your future fellow students. Participation is possible without being enrolled yet, and there is a one-time fee of €20 to cover printing costs. Lectures and materials are provided in English, while tutorials can also be held in German.

Game Night – August 2025
It’s time again! We are back organizing another Video & Board Game Night this Monday, August 4th in MMCI E1.7, starting at 6:00 PM!
We offer several seminar rooms in which you can play board games in German or English with friends or new fellow students. Additionally, we’ll offer gaming consoles in the foyer where you’ll find games like Mario Kart, Just Dance, Smash Bros, and more. If wanted: Bring your own.
As always, we’ll be ordering pizza at 8:00 PM, so bring some cash, if you want to join in. There will also be free snacks and drinks available, and additional drinks will be sold at a small and fair price on-site. Again, if wanted: Bring your own.

RindPhi Quiz Night – SEASON FINALE
We are calling in for the final iteration of the second season of the RindPhi Quiz Night!
This time, we will host ourselves in building E1.7 (MMCI), Room 001, right on Campus! [1] . The Quiz Night happens there on July 24th, starting from 07:00 PM. As per usual you can join up in teams of up to 6 persons.
In this Quiz Night you can join together as a team with your friends and challenge your fellow students and other participating teams in a competition for knowledge, wisdom and honor. Our moderator will challenge your minds in five exciting categories!
As we only have limited space please pre-register your team, to ensure a guaranteed spot! For more details, check the full post!
For this final iteration, we are raising the stakes: Additional point multipliers will be added to the overall season score for the top two teams of this iteration (3x for the first team, 1.5x for the second team). So make sure to brush up your knowledge and keep track of your Quiz Night meta knowledge!

After waiting for such a long time, we’re finally organizing another FSR PubCrawl on July 10th!
To participate, please register by July 9th via the link (fsr.saarland/pubcrawl) so we can plan accordingly—securing your spot in one of the pub crawl groups, along with your free welcome beer and shot.
The meeting point for our pregame is at the Saarbrücker Staatstheater at 18:30. From there, we’ll begin touring Saarbrücken’s bars and pubs in groups starting around 19:45.
If you forgot to register, you can still join us at the Staatstheater before the PubCrawl starts; however, we cannot guarantee there will be space for you to join the actual crawl.

Summer-BBQ 2025
Also this year, the joint summer festival of the student councils of the Computer Science and Mathematics departments is back! On July 3, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM, you’ll find us on the lawn between the Günther-Hotz Lecture Hall and E2.5.
As always, we will be firing up the Schwenker and offering a variety of grilled foods at low prices. We will also have several vegan and vegetarian options available. We are happy to announce that we will also have halal food options available! The Mathematics student council will provide soft drinks, beer and smoothies at fair prices. For the first time, we will also be able to accept card payments during the BBQ!
Additionally, we are delighted to offer a free cake and salad buffet again this year. For the cakes, we are kindly supported by a donation from the FdSI. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for this support!

We are happy to invite you to another one of our famous free breakfasts, just in time for the summer start!
The next breakfast happens on Tuesday, June 03rd starting from 09:30 AM in our rooms (E1.3 R109) Join us for some fresh bread rolls and a wide variety of cold cuts, cheese and spreads! Additionally we will have a selection of fruits and vegetables, along with juices, and of course lots and lots of coffee!
Starting at 11:30 AM, we will also offer Hot-Dogs with a selection of toppings!
