We are delighted to now also formally announce our upcoming chess tournament. For this, we have teamed up with Hochschulschach for a real over the board tournament! The tournament will take place on Tuesday, 16th of December, at 16:00 in E1 1, R. 407. Please arrive at least 10min earlier to register with the tournament management team. We will provide everything but the chess knowledge, so feel free to sign up without strings attached (There won’t be a dedicated explanation of rules, so we kind of expect that you have played chess before). No matter your skill level, we aim for everyone to get multiple nice matches to test your wits and challenge your opponent.
That’s why the tournament will be in the Swiss System: There will be 9 rounds, in each of which you will play against an opponent with the same amount of points — and after you are finished, we will pair the next round based on your results. This way, you cannot get eliminated and also have the possibility for a comeback even after a few losses! So that the tournament can have a meaningful number of rounds, each match will have a 5+0 time format.
To have a fair initial seating, we ask you to inform us about your current ranking on some other chess platforms. It is neither fun for you, nor your opponent, if your match is extremely lopsided, so please answer truthfully. This is not about winning the tournament, but to have fun, exciting and challenging matches each round!
Because we only have limited amount of equipment and room size restrictions, we can only accommodate 32 participants. Registrations will be done on a first-come-first-serve basis for more reliable plannability for the organisers. If the 32 seats are all occupied, we will have a waiting list, and if someone deregisters or doesn’t make it to the tournament, you might get a slot after all!
