Chess Tournament 2.0

The Chess Tournament returns! After last years successful tournament, we cooperate with Hochschulschach and the student council Language Science and Technology and again organise a over-the-board chess tournament. The tournament takes place Wednesday, April 29th, at 16:00 in A2 2, R.2.07.1. Please be there on time to register with the tournament organisers. We provide all the necessary material except the chess skills, so feel free to register. Independent of your playing strength we aim for everyone to have interesting games, challenge your wits and bring your opponents play to its limits.

That’s why the tournament will be in the Swiss System: There will be 6 rounds, in each of which you will play against an opponent with the same amount of points — and after you are finished, we will pair the next round based on your results. This way, you cannot get eliminated and also have the possibility to still win the entire tournmant even after a loss! This time, each match will have a 5+5time format, i.e. each player starts with 5 minutes on their clock and gets 5 seconds bonus time after every move.

To have a fair initial seating, we ask you to inform us about your current ranking on some other chess platforms. It is neither fun for you, nor your opponent, if your match is extremely lopsided, so please answer truthfully. This is not about winning the tournament, but to have fun, exciting and challenging matches each round!

Because we only have limited amount of equipment and room size restrictions, we can only accommodate 32 participants. Registrations will be done on a first-come-first-serve basis for more reliable plannability for the organisers. If the 32 seats are all occupied, we will have a waiting list, and if someone unregisters or doesn’t make it to the tournament, you might get a slot after all! We will inform you about your registration status shortly before the event. If you want to deregister, please write an email to anton@cs.fs.uni-saarland.de.
